Working with Andy Griffith
When I received the script of the Andy Griffith episode, "High School Reunion", I discovered it was a love story, both funny and bittersweet and very well written.
When the director contacted me to see if I will want to play Andy's high school sweetheart, "Sharon de Spain", who comes home for the Mayberry high school prom reunion, I said, "Yes, I love the script."
Working with Andy Griffith was an absolute pleasure. He was a gentleman - he was cordial and a wonderful actor. In between takes, he would treat us to banjo solos and some wonderful country songs.
The scene I remember most vividly was when Sharon de Spain and Andy finished dancing together, with the people of Mayberry looking on, hoping that their big high school romance would bloom again and they went to the garden, sat down on a bench, and looked at each other.
The next event in the script was that they fell in love again and kissed passionately. Andy being a rather shy man said, "I don't think we need to kiss, do you?" He almost blushed. I looked at him and said quietly, "Andy, I do think we need to kiss - it won't be so bad." There was a silence, and he said, "Oh, alright."
A lot of people who saw that scene have asked me, "Was Andy Griffith a good kisser?" I'm here to say he certainly was.
